오늘 아침 지인에게 온 카톡을 받았는데 내용인즉 킹제임스 성경으로 사역하는 어떤 목사가 킹제임스 성경을 이해하려면 21세기 영어가 아니라 17세기 영어를 알아야 한다고 주장한다는 글을 보냈습니다.  얼핏 일리 있는 말 같지만 현대 영어로 배운 영어로는 17세기에 번역된 킹제임스 성경을 제대로 이해할 수 없다는 참으로 희귀한 논리요, 사실은 영어 킹제임스 성경을 "사어"-죽은 언어, 더 이상 사용하지 않는 언어로 치부함으로써 하나님의 말씀을 배척하도록 만드는 *마귀의 속임수요, 간계입니다. 17세기 때나 18세기나 21세기나 대부분의 영어 킹제임스 성경의 어휘(말씀)는 그대로입니다. 영어는 한글과 달리 일찍이 활자, 인쇄술의 발명으로 인해 17세기 언어는 구어의 영향을 받지 않고 아무 문제없이 고정이 되었습니다. 


특히 사역자들 중에서 17세기 영어를 운운하며 킹제임스 성경의 단어를 따로 공부해야 한다는 식으로 주장하거나 그 의미가 너무 많이 달라져서 현대 영어로는 킹제임스 성경을 알 수 없다는 주장 등은 모두 헛소리에 불과합니다.  하지만 소위 교수니 학자니 영어와 관련된 박사님들이나 전문가들, 성경 번역가라는 사람들이 이런 말을 하면 사람들의 외모를 취하는 사람들은 쉽게 속습니다. 그러나 알고보면 그런 주장을 하는 사람도 사실은 17세기 영어를 따로 배운 사람들이 아니라 20세기, 21세기에서 배운 영어로 킹제임스 성경을 읽고 이해합니다. 그러다 막히는 부분이 나오면 나오면 사전을 찾아서 고어를 확인합니다. 이는 현대 영어를 배우는 일반인들도 똑같습니다. 한국의 킹제임스 교회들 중에도 좋은 말과 그럴듯한 말로 속이는 이런 사람이 몇몇 있습니다.


지금은 속이는 자들이 많이 들어온 세대입니다. 거짓 교사들, 거짓 사역자들이 간교한 말로 속입니다.  성경은 말합니다. 


“너희가 마귀의 간계들을 능히 대적하며 서기 위해 [하나님]의 전신갑주를 입으라.”(엡 6:11)


아래는 단어의 의미가 많이 바뀐 것으로 회자되는 킹제임스 성경의 고어를 모아 보았습니다. 어휘 공부를 해보면 거의 같은 뜻이며 모르는 단어는 공부하면 되는 정도임을 쉽게 알 수 있습니다. 고어란 것은 잘 사용하지 않아서 고어일 뿐입니다. 성경을 부지런히 읽고 공부하는 사람에게 킹제임스 성경은 언제나 최신 현대어입니다. 20세기에 태어나 한국에서 영어를 배운 저에게도 아래 단어들이 별로 어렵지 않습니다. 하물며 영, 미권에서는 말할 필요도 없습니다. 주일학교 어린애들도 읽는데 아무 어려움이 없습니다. 17세기 영어니 고어니 하며 속이는 자들의 속셈은 성도들로 하여금 주의 말씀을 어렵게 하고, 멀리하려는데 있습니다. 이런 자는 마귀의 사역자입니다.
